Assessing Park Deficiency in an Urban Environment
Assessing park deficiency is the need to define park deficiency and apply the corresponding criteria as more land is consumed for residential and commercial development. Identification of these lands is important to maintain a balance between multiple land use objectives.A spatial model using cost surfaces is used to determine suitability of land for use as wildlife corridors, passive parks, and active parks. This paper provides a definition for park deficiency and demonstrates how GIS can be used to determine park deficient areas. The methods described in this paper can be used as a model to empower park planners and decision makers in park deficiency assessment. The large amount of information in this analysis requires workstation ArcInfo for data processing. ArcView, used for viewing and analyzing data sets, can then be used by any number of persons interested in making better land use planning decisions.
