Desktop GIS for Floodplain Evaluation  Paper Text

Any large metropolitan city, such as Los Angeles, is expected to have difficulties in managing its infrastructure. The City's Storm Water Management Division is certainly no exception. With more than 3,000 miles of storm drain conduits and 6,400 catch basins, the management and dissemination of this information is a daunting task. Psomas and Associates was contracted by the City of Los Angeles more than three years ago to provide GIS consulting services to address this issue. In that time, Psomas has digitally converted the City's entire storm drain system and has also developed a number of tools that have been used to access the City's GIS database. Many of the tools designed by Psomas and Associates have integrated the most recent technologies for desktop GIS. This paper will present two applications that have been developed by Psomas for the City's Storm Water Management Division. More specifically, we will demonstrate the effectiveness of using tools such as MapObjects and Internet Map Server. In both cases, Psomas has integrated into the City's workplace, easy-to-use interfaces that allow City staff, or the general public, to access critical flood zone information for any property within the City.
