GIS Use in the Conservation Nonprofits: The Role for Everybody Else

The author's dissertation research constructs a framework for necessary and sufficient characteristics of effective GIS usage by small-scale conservation organizations; this framework then proposes roles for interested external parties. The research combined a review of literature on GIS implementation and social movement issues, and field work-expert interviews, surveys, and case studies of conservation organizations in the California and Pacific northwest conducted over a two-year period. For effective GIS utilization in these organizations, research finds a list of prerequisite skills and activities, distinct models of usage, success factors in implementation and data sharing, and necessary linkages to other institutions. This framework presents roles for vendors, universities, technical assistance organizations, agencies, and interested individuals in enhancing the diffusion of GIS across the movement and augmenting the capacity and resources in individual conservation nonprofits.
