Managing Lithologic and Geologic Data Using ArcView and Oracle
Information related to lithologic and geophysical data is a key requirement in understanding and modeling the groundwater movement and quality. Capture and management of this type of data in a regional setting requires a database management system and a robust set of supporting tools. Existing software solutions either do not incorporate geographic information systems (GIS) or cannot easily integrate GIS data. In addition, they are mostly based on closed database management solutions that are not easily expandable. This paper discusses a system for management and display of the lithologic and geophysical data using an Oracle relational database coupled with ArcView. The system is currently in use by the engineers and scientists in South Florida Water Management District to manage the delicate groundwater resources in the Southern Florida region.
