Fitting GIS into Broader Local Government Technology Development Efforts
Snohomish County, which includes the northern portions of the Seattle, Washington, metropolitan area, has developed a large, multiparticipant, distributed geographic information system during the past six years. The County's Department of Information Services (DIS), which coordinates and supports GIS application and database development activities among several dozen participating local government organizations, also supports other client/server, Internet/Intranet, and PC desktop application solutions that are integrated over both local and wide area networks. DIS clients face a variety of financial, technical, and institutional issues in redesigning and automating daily business functions that will improve productivity and service to the public. As part of the solution, DIS is replacing the legacy information system and is embracing several new hardware configuration, software programming, and database connectivity standards. Snohomish County's combined organization, technology, and GIS deployment
strategies are refacilitating new and unprecedented sharing of geospatial information among local government organizations and the general public.
