The GIS-Based Design of Dynamic Simulation System on Urban Municipal and Public Facilities
Defining Issue: The urban land capacity varies unceasingly with the rapid progress of urban economic construction in China, and the balance between the land capacity and underground infrastructure, such as the water, wastewater, power, post service, heating, and gas pipe systems, is therefore upset frequently. One of the key problems accompanying the urban development is reestablishing the balance between the systems.GIS Solution: The School of Informatics Engineering of Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping developed a workstation-based application to assist the planner in problem solving.Methodology: The system developed can provide the planner and designer with the optimal pipe system arrangement corresponding to a specific land capacity, such as the capacity of population building density, or housing density, or with the maximum land capacity corresponding to the existing pipe systems. It is characterized by the design methods and advanced techniques adopted against the traditional
ways. It makes, for example, full use of the spatial management and analysis techniques of GIS, so that very high speed and precision of data processing (e.g., calculation and evaluation of the land capacity, water calculation and optimization, judgment and query of objects, comparison and selection of schemes) can be guaranteed or obtained. In addition, the system pursues procedures dynamically and visualizes all spatial and aspatial results, so the planner and designer can easily find and judge all pipes that are not suitable for the current land capacity, and then define the improving strategies according to the processing results. The authors pay much attention in the paper to the implementation methods of dynamic simulation, and some issues on optimizing water calculation of pipelines (e.g. the water, wastewater, and heating systems), forecast of land capacity, and so forth, are also considered.Software: The application was written in AML and Visual C++ language and can operate under the ArcInfo
environment. It is the first GIS-based application system on planning, design, and management of urban municipal and public facilities in China and has been used in Qingdao Urban Planning and Design Institute, Shandong Province, China.
