Environmental Risk Information in GIS Applications

Consistent and accurate environmental information is critical to meeting government EPA regulations in assessing and auditing properties for purposes of meeting the "innocent landowners defense" under CERCLA criteria and minimizing risk to financial institutions in funding or loan processing for businesses. Many governmental sources are available to use in audits and assessment of properties; however, they are inconsistent, available from different agencies in different times, and have different update cycles. In addition, none are geocoded and provided in a form usable with GIS applications for environmental assessment purposes. This paper and presentation reviews the governmental and standards specific to spatial data requirements for environmental site assessment and related audit applications. Methods for standardization, geocoding, and research for hazards are also presented. Information sources and applications in real-world assessment situations are presented as a conclusion.
