Creating Guidelines for Updating and Creating Vector Map Products from Multiple Sources
Defining Issue: How to determine the best available map source for feature line work and attribution information to update and/or create an accurate Vector Product Format (VPF) database.GIS Solution: We developed a set of explicit guidelines to aid in the challenging process of creating or updating a VPF map using multiple sources. Our technique individually evaluates each source based on the features to be captured and attributed.Methodology: Database user requirements were determined before establishing the guidelines. The guidelines are based on a comparative study of several sources including maps, atlases, and travel guide books. Specific guidelines regarding features were prioritized between sources based on temporal factors, cartographic integrity, and the overall purpose of the source. The more specific and recent data was extracted to encapsulate the best information from all of the sources. The initial guidelines will continue to evolve throughout the production process. Producing these
guidelines will lead to the development of "default values" that will accelerate the capture and coding process.
