A Method for Registering Maps and Satellite Imagery of Unknown Geodetic Properties and Cartographic Integrity to a Vector Database of Known Geodetic Properties and Cartographic Integrity

Defining Issue: The process of registering multiple sources to an existing database to allow on-screen vector updating for large-scale maps was an arduous task. Each source contained unique characteristics regarding geodetic properties and cartographic integrity, a fact that made the registration process challenging. GIS Solution: The author has developed a methodology to register the multiple sources using ArcInfo and ERDAS software. Methodology: Many ArcInfo commands were used to attempt registration using the existing vector coverage as the control coverage. These commands included register/rectify, controlpoints/gridwarp, and adjust. The controlpoints/gridwarp commands yielded the most favorable results. The scanned images were split into small enough entities to allow satisfactory registration. After establishing links through the use of control points, I performed a second order transformation on the images using the gridwarp command. The results enabled on-screen vector updating from the native maps and satellite imagery of unknown geodetic properties and cartographic integrity to an existing vector database of known geodetic property and cartographic integrity.
