Using GIS of Climate, Vegetation at Knuckles Range Education and the Public

Defining Issue: To study the highly variable topographic, forest, and climatic conditions that prevail in this area for better ecosystem management. GIS Solution: Information on the Knuckles Range and its rugged terrain is difficult to visualize when the topographic, vegetation, and climate data are hardly available and accessible. The only way to get an overview of the entire range is through the application of GIS. Methodology: Topographic features are digitized from the Rangala map prepared by the Survey Department. Forest cover and climatic data are taken from the Department of Forest and Meteorology. Knowledge and application of Atlas GIS, ArcInfo, and IDRISI will be used to identify the relationship between topography, vegetation, and climate. Software: Atlas GIS, ArcInfo, and IDRISI software are used with a simple personal computer to avoid limitations. The purpose of the paper is to overcome problems faced during the integration of the different software products.
