GIS Implementation "Roadmap" for the North Sea
GIS Infrastructure for the North Sea Directorate, Ministry of Traffic, Public Works and Water Management of the Netherlands. The GIS Infrastructure to be built for the North Sea Directorate is based on a concept and technology that is new to this part of the Ministry. - It affects the entire organization of the Directorate - The kernel of the proposed solution is a geo(graphic) data warehouse. Initially the geodata warehouse will be built in ArcInfo, but the final goal is an SDE-based implementation - Implementation of a metadata system (Geokey). This metadata system serves the documentation of the data in the geodata warehouse, provides the end users with a data catalog, and is used to select and distribute the data to the end user application. - Use of ArcView GIS Version 3.0 as an end user GIS tool and as an application development framework. The geodata warehouse will be populated with data concerning utilities, infrastructure, soundings, environmental quality, resources, monitoring, and so
forth, and will have users inside and outside the organization of the North Sea Directorate. All data in the geodata warehouse will be consolidated from the operational systems and databases at the Directorate. Consolidation includes simple "uploading," snapshots in time, and both spatial and temporal aggregations. With the metadata system, end users are able to browse the data including all kinds of (half) products like maps, coverages, and bit maps. Data stored in the geodata warehouse is ready for selection and distribution for use in end user applications.ArcView GIS Version 3.0 is considered a very suitable product to use when dealing with most end user needs. The expectation is that it will be much cheaper to use "out -of-the-box" tools like ArcView as end user tolls than to develop (expensive) tailor-made applications.
