Organizational Changes That Increase GIS Benefits
GIS offers enormous benefits to an organization through its capabilities to integrate data, index information, and facilitate cross-discipline communication. But the potential presented by this technology does not ensure its achievement. Several organizational changes are described in order to take advantage of GIS technology's potential. Changes to be discussed include redefining the mission of the GIS/mapping department, restructuring duties and communication lines, staff development and ramp-up, and financing the maintenance and update of the system.
