An Assessment of Internet GIS Development
The Internet has been changing the ways of GIS data access, sharing, and dissemination. It is further changing the means of GIS analysis and visualization. While considerable efforts and progress were made in GIS data access and transmission in the past two years, conducting GIS analysis and visualization on the Internet is only at its infancy. This paper reviews and assesses the recent development of Internet-based GIS. Three major technologic developments in the Internet GIS are reviewed and assessed: CGI (Common Gateway Interface) based dynamic mapping systems, GIS plug-ins, and Internet programming languages such as Java and ActiveX controls. A prototype application using GIS plug-ins (MapGuide), Java-based ActiveMaps, and ActiveX-based MapObjects Internet Map Server is under development by the author and will be presented in the conference and the conference paper. The merits and drawbacks of different approaches will also be discussed.
