An Industrial Sites Analysis and Marketing Tool for Electric Utilities
Defining Issue: With the impending deregulation of electric utilities in the United States, much greater emphasis is being placed on the marketing and customer relations.GIS Solution: In response to increasing competition for prime industrial customers, Oglethorpe Power Corporation retained the services of Pacific Meridian Resources to develop an industrial sites and buildings spatial analysis tool to be used in attracting new industrial customers to the State of Georgia. This tool incorporates and enhances capabilities of the GIS and CAD software packages currently used by Oglethorpe Power to produce and manage site information.Methodology: Pacific Meridian Resources has developed an ArcView application that is easy to use and flexible. The majority of this work comprised designing and developing customized display and query tools that complemented Oglethorpe Power's existing software functionality and served to increase the accuracy and utility of their existing information. In order to produce
the maximum benefit at the least cost to Oglethorpe Power, the application incorporated commercial data sources and software whenever it was appropriate. The application includes the integration of Oglethorpe Power's BuildingBank and SiteBank data (an Access database) into an ArcView environment capable of displaying and searching these data on a state-wide basis. USGS DRGs were customized so as to provide an economical but highly recognized basemap for presentation and analysis of demographic and industrial sites data. Also included in this application is an industrial site template that guides the user through the available tabular and spatial information associated with each site or group of sites.
