Development of a Transaction Management System for Vector Databases
Defining Issue: Spatial databases developed and distributed by government agencies are often enhanced by end users. Upon annual releases it is often difficult for users to identify where changes have been made and the best methodology for integrating changes into their enhanced database. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the Federal Highway Administration commissioned the development of a system with the ability to manage and record transactions made to their databases so that changes can be monitored, recovered, and integrated into previous versions of their databases.Methodology: The transaction management system is made up of a GUI that contains a host of editing tools, and a number of external routines that allow editing transactions to points, lines, polygons, routes systems, and attributes to be monitored and logged transparent to the user. The system also includes the ability to manage and automatically update unique user-defined internal identifiers. The transaction files managed by
the system allow the user to back-trace changes made to databases, thereby aiding the integration of changes into previous versions of the database.Software: The system was written using AML and consists of a GUI and external routines that utilize ARC, ARCEDIT, ARCPLOT and TABLES modules. The purpose of this paper is to review the functionality of the system, demonstrate how transactions are managed, and demonstrate how changes from a current database can be integrated into a previous version.
