Enterprise Access to Spatial Data Using SDE in a Telecommunications Environment

Defining Issue: Enterprise access must be fast and simple in order for a diverse user community to leverage the use of spatial data in solving telecommunications business problems. GIS Solution: Pacific Bell is beginning the implementation of a Pacific Bell Enterprise Spatial Database, and a variety of client software, to provide access to a uniform, companywide spatial framework. Methodology: Spatial data, including street centerlines, parcel boundaries in some areas, and corporate data such as wire center and exchange boundaries, are loaded into a central SDE database. Client software is developed to provide a range of capability, from simple viewing and map production to more complex analysis. However, the major focus is on database development and distribution. Software: Spatial data are stored in SDE using Oracle. Clients are developed using ArcView Version 3.0 and MapObjects. A current area of research is the development of Web-based browser clients.
