Using GIS To Manage Water Resources (Reservoirs) That Supply Water for Municipal Use in Ankara, Turkey

Defining Issue: It is not easy to manage all the reservoirs around the City via classical techniques. GIS Solution: Greater Ankara Municipality Data Processing Department developed an easy-to-use application with Ankara Water and Wastewater Department based on ArcInfo and AML (ARC Macro Language). Methodology: This project is developing a comprehensive approach to watershed management for Ankara municipal water resources. This mission is to keep the water quality in the reservoirs at a safe and healthy level for ourselves and future generations. The project is conducting detailed investigations and analysis of the entire reservoir for innovative solutions for controlling construction around the reservoir. To accomplish this, the required information which consists of drainage areas, land use, land cover, and pollutant sources, is obtained. To manage this information, watershed analysis tools required the design and analysis of a geographic information system. To delineate the constructions within the protection zone of the reservoir, a GIS methodology, the overlay procedure is utilized. A land use grid and a DEM are created. The locations of construction are obtained by GPS technology. The land use grid is obtained by overlaying the land use, construction, and reservoir coverage. Also, any information about the reservoir can easily be obtained (e.g., the reservoir volume for an elevation, the dead volume for the reservoirs.) During these procedures many functions to determine the basin characteristics such as three-dimensional draping and rainfall pathfinding are used. As a result the municipality of Ankara will have any information about the reservoirs that supply all the water for the City. Software: The application was written using AML and the maps are produced using ArcView since it supports Turkish.
