Creating and Updating GIS Map Control Monumentation

Defining Issue: Establishing a citywide point coverage of control monuments is essential to creating an accurate GIS data set. Mapping, updating, and distributing these points to your community's surveyors and developers is also crucial to the success of your GIS system. GIS Solution: The City of Little Rock, Public Works Department has developed a program to both add new monuments on the ground and incorporate them into GIS. Methodology: The Public Works Department has created a program of entering new map control monuments by using information found on control data sheets. These control data sheets are submitted as required by the City's subdivision ordinance. They are 8 1/2" x 11" sheets with a field sketch of the new monument and pertinent survey data including station name, monument by, order, date, northing, easting, and elevation. Software: Using ArcInfo and ARC Macro Language, a program was written to take these data and put them into digital form using ARC and ARCEDIT. ARCPLOT is then used to update the City-wide maps for distribution to a predetermined mailing list of customers.
