Biodiversity Conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean Using Appropriate Spatial Information Technologies
Defining Issue: Development of spatial information technologies in international nonprofit conservation organizations can be hindered by the limited resources and technical expertise. For useful results directly applicable to our conservation priorities we must develop ways in which we can unite forces to access appropriate levels of technology.Methodology: The Nature Conservancy's Latin America and Caribbean Division is working within a network of technical conservation nongovernment organizations throughout Latin America and the Caribbean on developing appropriate technologies for conservation. Together we have developed methodologies, such as the Rapid Ecological Assessment, that streamline our biological and socioeconomic data collection and analyses for conservation planning and decision making. This methodology takes advantage of remote sensing and GIS techniques and works with appropriate levels of technologies, defined by data availability, technical expertise, and available financial
resources. The Nature Conservancy is working to strengthen this network of technical partners and to facilitate the collection and sharing of valuable biodiversity data.Software: PC ARC/INFO and ArcView and various other software packages
