Utilizing Virtual Administrator Software for UNIX System Administration

Mason is a graduate of Georgia Tech University and has been active in the software development industry for over 25 years. As a co-owner of Atlanta Software, Inc., he has developed and implemented systems encompassing accounting, inventory, data collection, and data communications on a wide range of systems including mainframes, mini and microcomputers. Twelve years ago Mason was introduced to the UNIX operating system and was dismayed at the amount of time required to properly administer this type of system. In 1984 he began the analysis and design of a set of programs that would automate the tasks associated with system-administration. As UNIX became more complex, he continually added programs to take care of mundane and time consuming tasks. The end result of these twelve years of effort is a suite of over 650 interacting Bourne shell scripts that has been named the Virtual Administrator. The Virtual Administrator automates most of the tasks associated with administering a UNIX system, thereby freeing the system administrator for more productive tasks such as application development. Mason has addressed a large variety of local and national UNIX users groups explaining the benefits of the Virtual Administrator and how it is indispensable in today's UNIX environment. Mason's presentations are extremely informative and entertaining.
