Application of Geographical Information Systems-GIS in Characterization and Plan Management for the Nature Reserves of the Civil Society in Colombia

Defining Issue: There exists the necessity to consolidate the efforts of conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in different regions of the country through the potentialization of social and environmental services offered by the nature reserves. For this purpose it is essential to know the biotic and physical aspects as well as the social strengths and weaknesses that are involved in order to make decisions at the local, regional, and national level. GIS Solution: On the basis of the data obtained by GIS analysis, we pretend to know the existing ecosystems in order to arrange a management plan that involves not only the owners of the reserves but also the neighbors, the state, and the civil society as responsible for the sustainable management and peace factors. Methodology: On the basis of basic information such as cartography, aerial photography, secondary information obtained from the community as well as from the local coinvestigators and the Nature Reserves Net, field trips are made at each reserve to obtain the data that are set down in technical cards previously established and that are then introduced to a database by specific subjects. Field trip corroboration is made to adjust the information, which is then integrated to the GIS, producing information capable to be analyzed and confronted with the data contributed by the community and the consultant team. Thematic maps are produced that permit a better visualization of the conflicts and possible solutions, degrees of affectation and environmental impact, areas of influence to or from the reserves, that will permit the establishment of criteria for a management plan consistent with the needs of each locality. An integration was made among the database, the results of the GIS, and an application capable to be consulted by the user without the necessity of knowing the internal software operation. Software: The work has been designed using ArcCAD, AutoCAD, ArcView, and Access for an integration based on objects that can be consulted from the database simultaneously or independently from ArcView or Access, for internal use as well as for the final users. Note: The Association Net of Nature Reserves of the Civil Society has a national action plan at the local and regional level. If you wish more information, do not hesitate to ask for our theoretic and conceptual framework as well as our action records.
