SIEZCHA: Information System for the Determination of Critical Areas of Management in the "Chingaza" Natural National Park

This work presents the SIEZCHA system, a tool that helps park administrators define management policies by determining critical areas based on representative variables of natural national parks. These variables represent both physical and administrative features. The Chingaza Natural National Park was chosen as a case study, and its representative variables are vegetation unit, type of property, soil use, and natural disasters. The system has the following features : An easy menu-driven interaction allowing the use of all productive and functional tools of the system, update of the system`s geographic database, and support of spatial queries and attribute information. Map visualization and generation of the critical areas for each representative variable considered and also the interaction among them. Integrity of the geographic database is assured by storing and updating operations. Information security and access control is implemented using security levels and database privileges. The system has been developed on ArcInfo Version 7 for information management and on ArcView Version 2.1 for user interaction. SIEZCHA is a first work in the area and has been designed not only for Chingaza Natural National Park, but can also be easily implemented for other protected areas by defining their representative variables. From this point of view, SIEZCHA represents (defines) a methodology to develop decision making tools for national parks administration.
