ArcInfo Development via GRID Functions of a New Methodology to Assess Groundwater Contamination Risk
Defining Issue: Developed a new methodology (Civita, 1995) for the assessment and zoning of groundwater quality degradation risk starting from the point of view of interaction of all the potential and effective contamination sources to all risk targets within the same country frame.GIS Solution: To realize the goal, data processing has transformed all the base coverages in ARCGRID. Via Map algebra functions, a number of procedures written in AML have been implemented to perform a "cell by cell" analysis of the risk condition. To identify risk, its identified range has been divided into six classes and the zoning has been obtained on the whole investigated zone.Methodology: The processing procedures gives all connection scenarios of the underground hydrogeological system and its sensitivity to contamination (vulnerability, effective flow direction, time of travel, etc.) to the geographical position and the groundwater contamination potential of contamination source centre (CSC). The contamination
risk concept contains the assessment of damage deriving from a possible contamination impact. Then the data processing has to take into account the quality and use of groundwater resource. The contamination risk map is built starting from the following three points: the sensitivity of the system potentially impacted, the statistical probability of the contamination impact, and the severity of the waited damage. The methodology and its implementation by GIS have been tested in several zones within a scientific research program of the Italian Council of Research.Software: ArcInfo and integration of different software products
