Canadian Automated Air Traffics System (CATS)
In the past, GIS has been applied extensively to the management of various forms of ground-based transportation such as highway and rail. No large-scale applications of GIS have as of yet been applied to the world of civil and military aviation. This paper will discuss a GIS application currently under development that provides data and support to the CANADIAN Automated Air Traffic System (CATS), developed by Hughes Aircraft of Canada. In addition, it will present the unique spatial problems involved in dealing with aviation and, in particular, problems of concern to an air traffic controller, and describe how they were solved and implemented using the ArcInfo GIS product.
