Techniques for Displaying PostScript Files on the World Wide Web  Paper Text

The World Wide Web (WWW) has become the de facto medium to communicate and to share information electronically. Research scientists, commercial companies, and the public can use the WWW as a common interface, thus enabling them to access each other`s work. The formatting of a WWW page relies on the use of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), which supports text, graphics, and sound. The PostScript file format is widely used in the publishing world and also in the GIS arena to store and to produce graphical images. This complex graphical file format is not supported in HTML and these Postscript files therefore have to be converted to another format in order to be displayed on the WWW. The different techniques that are used to convert PostScript files into a WWW friendly format will be discussed in this document.
