Digital Atlas of Colombia as a Georeferenced Information System - 1:500,000 Scale
Defining Issue: There is not any Colombian geological data in a single document properly organized in a way that allows the users to make a decision regarding natural resources development. GIS Solution: Ingeominas (the Colombian geological service) with Prosis technical support developed a digital application as a GIS to satisfy the geological data user needs. Methodology: A description of the methodology used during the production of the Digital Geological Atlas of Colombia is made, showing the process through which it was possible to develop this GIS application. It was based on the Ingeominas database model already developed. The parameters considered as a reference frame for the Atlas were the result of a wide research work carried on by the Colombian geological community. The final result is a document that includes the regional geological information over the whole country, in a digital format. Software: The application was developed using ArcInfo for UNIX. The purpose of the paper is to
illustrate the application and its functions.
