GIS Network Editing Tools for Transportation Model Data Management
In a project with GIS/Trans, the Southern California Association of Governments has "conflated" or merged its transportation model networks with its Thomas Brothers basemap. This allows the transportation modelers to create easy-to-understand, spatially accurate maps to display their modeling results for highway and transit and to perform a variety of spatial analyses on the model networks using ArcInfo and ArcView. This is part of a larger project that allows the TRANPLAN model to read networks directly from ArcInfo and write these results from TRANPLAN directly into ArcInfo. Having successfully expressed their transportation model networks in the GIS, the next issue confronted by the modelers is how to maintain their model networks, which are constantly being updated and used to create new alternatives. The modelers are very familiar with travel demand forecasting software, but are less familiar with GIS. The solution adopted has been to create network editing tools (NETs) that allow point and click
editing of the specialized route systems that represent TRANPLAN street segments. The NETs are built in ArcInfo with an ArcTools interface. While the NETs were developed for TRANPLAN networks used by a particular agency, it could easily be modified for any transportation model network represented as a route system on a basemap. The presentation will demonstrate how the NETs can be used to manage transportation model networks in ArcInfo including modifying the spatial and attribute data.
