Rapid Application Development (RAD) and ArcView: A New Horizon for GIS Application Development  Paper Text

In recent years an ever growing commitment to networking and distributed client/server computing in the GIS industry gives GIS users an alternative to terminal-oriented workstation solutions. An excellent example is the Interapplication Communication (IAC) functionality available on ArcView and ArcInfo, which provides GIS application developers with flexible tools for creating a customized GIS/IS integrated system from separate software and database management pieces. Under Microsoft Windows, ArcView can interact with Rapid Application Development (RAD) or visual programming environments such as Delphi or Visual Basic through dynamic data exchange (DDE). This provides a large collection of easy-to-use widgets like buttons and multimedia players for developing a wide range of GIS applications. This article discusses the use of RAD tools with ArcView for developing GIS applications, such as kiosk public access systems and facility management systems, and tells how these tools can pave the way for faster application development and integrated GIS/IS solutions.
