Enhanced Cartographic Editing Using ArcInfo

A cartographic production system was produced to create topographic line maps using data extracted from satellite imagery. Cartographic presentation requires certain enhancements to data not normally necessary within a GIS. A menu-driven editing tool has been developed within ARCEDIT as part of the system to interactively manage these enhancements. Symbology is applied to the data set in final map form to allow for cartographic decisions and adjustments to be made in a WYSIWYG environment. Text placement, symbol offsets, line offsets, and shading patterns can therefore be taken into account initially at the data editing stage. Similarly, an interactive tool has been developed to manipulate the cartographic elements comprising the final map layout. This tool, run from within the ARCPLOT environment, allows the user to move, rotate and delete map components, as well as add graphic elements to customize the map sheet. These tools have been designed to address the functionality requirements specific to cartographic output and facilitate their implementation.
