A Geographic Model of White Spruce Establishment Patterns in Interior Alaska: Applied Use and Management Implications  Paper Text

A description of a process-oriented model of early forest establishment patterns is presented for white spruce ecosystems in interior Alaska. The model has been created within the ARC GRID package of ArcInfo, utilizing a complex set of AMLs and input menus. The model simulates the production and dispersal of seed and the resultant seedling establishment patterns upon the landscape. The strict geographic representation of the model allows for simulation of regeneration dynamics upon a defined landscape unit. The model realistically simulates seed dispersal and seedling establishment patterns for a burnt white spruce ecosystem. Management implications and applied use for the interior forest ecosystems of Alaska are highlighted.
