Bidirectional Data Converter for IHO S57
Defining Issue: S57 Standard was finalized and accepted by the International Hydrographic Office (IHO) in September 1996. It will become an international standard to exchanging hydrographic data. GIS Solution: Defense Service Department of Esri developed an S57 compliant data converter to support our clients in hydrographic agencies worldwide. Methodology: A S57 compliant data converter was developed to import data from S57 format to ArcInfo for visualization, analysis, and editing. An exporter is also developed to allow the user to generate and exchange data in S57 format. Software: The converter was written using C and FORTRAN programming language with extensive use of Arc/Sdl (software development library).
