Esri SDE and AVS/Express Make High-End 3D Geospatial Visualization Available to Everyone
High-end three-dimensional computer graphics have been shown to be highly desirable for many applications including radar analysis, communications analysis, weather visualization, mission rehearsal, and force-on-force simulations. However, many systems that could take advantage of high-end three-dimensional graphics do not because of the high cost of application development. In the past, this cost has been excessively high because COTS high-end three-dimensional visualization tools have not been integrated with COTS geospatial databases. In the past, many projects have stored geospatial data in ArcInfo databases. This has many benefits, but has the limitation that ArcInfo cannot readily serve geospatial data for use by other tools. SDE changes this because it is an ideal geospatial data server.Advanced Visual Systems is providing sophisticated capabilities within its flagship AVS/Express product to visualize data accessed with SDE. AVS/Express is a development environment for creating high-end
three-dimensional visualization components and applications. The combination of AVS/Express and SDE make it possible to rapidly and cost effectively construct systems with high-end three-dimensional visualization capabilities.Components and applications constructed with AVS/Express can operate as SDE clients running on UNIX or Windows platforms. With this combination, high-end three-dimensional visualization does not need to be relegated to high-end systems, as has been the case in the past. Systems incorporating high-end three-dimensional visualization can now be cost effectively created and deployed across platforms from PCs to high-end graphics workstations like an SGI Onyx with a reality engine.
