Managing Environmental Clean Up Using GIS

Defining Issues: An environmental cleanup operation of a site with 44 SuperFund locations generates a tremendous amount of information that has to be managed and analyzed. GIS Solution: SEMCOR, Inc., developed an application that combines GIS, RDBMS, and modeling tools to address these issues for the Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES), Lakehurst, New Jersey. Methodology: The Environmental Engineering Information System (ENVEIS) developed by SEMCOR and NAES combines ArcInfo Oracle, ArcView, and EarthVisions into a unified environmental management system that allows the user, through an unified ArcView interface, to query and model environmental monitoring information as well as load and manage additional information. The system contains tools to automatically load information into the database without requiring the user to possess any Oracle database knowledge and also contains tools to automatically correct spelling errors in chemical names and other anomalies commonly found in lab report files. Other tools allow editing ArcInfo coverages from within ArcView and report generation facilities. Software: The application was written using Avenue to support cross platform development between SiliconGraphics and Sun workstations and Windows 95 PCs with embedded AML and SQL programs to support ArcInfo and Oracle functionality. The paper strives to highlight the application and its benefits and the role of the system integrator as a catalyst of change in environmental engineering.
