Integrated Highway Management: A Client/Server Solution Using SDE and ArcView
In the past, highway management systems that have incorporated GIS technology have tended to cater to small numbers of operational users and have existed on geographical data islands. Systems that have catered to the provision of management information through multiuser and multifunctional access have been developed within the database technology and have not easily been able to incorporate the spatial element. In many cases there has been a tradeoff between utilizing the performance and management tools of a leading RDBMS and harnessing the power of the spatial data with a GIS. The release of SDE and ArcView Version 3 has provided the client/server capabilities necessary to now incorporate GIS with RDBMS technologies to provide the enduser with the best of all worlds. Those tools relevant to the business`s need can now be brought together and placed at user`s fingertips to allow full data sharing both horizontally and vertically across an organization. This paper describes work done in the United
Kingdom incorporating SDE Version 3, ArcView, and an existing Oracle-based highway management system to provide an integrated solution that is both client/server and multiuser. The resultant system brings together the power of the database technology with the unique capabilities of a GIS and is capable of being implemented both within an organization`s site as well as nationally.
