MapObjects and Visual Basic Create a Bilingual Graphical User Interface
The North Slope Borough (NSB) Department of Planning and Community Services GIS Division has been pioneering GIS technology at the world's northernmost GIS since the early days of Esri. The need to develop a tool for the Traditional Land Use Database was accomplished with MapObjects and Visual Basic. A bilingual Graphical User Interface (GUI) was developed by NSB GIS and GeoNorth, Inc. as a solution to facilitate the collection, input, query and display of cultural resource information. Compiling a Traditional Land Use Inventory (TLUI) has been an ongoing process which began shortly after the formation of the North Slope Borough municipality in 1972. Since that time a living history of interactions between Inupiaq people and their environment has been collected. This includes locational information, place names and associated stories recorded during interviews with elders. The TLUI System is comprised of a bilingual map embedded into a database application with a bilingual Visual Basic front end.
Eventually it will incorporate imagery and sound files. Initially, the TLUI system will serve as a user friendly automation tool with the ability to cross reference archeological information from two additional databasdes. Currently, the users of the TLUI system include: Inup[iaq translators, archeologists, coral historians, and planners. As the TLUI system matures, it will be instrumental in demonstrating land use over time, decision making and education by documenting the connection between the land and the Inupiaq people.
