Changing Their Stripes: Teaching GIS Applications Programmers About Objects

The world of object data modeling and programming techniques offers tremendous benefits to the AM/FM/GIS development support staff. However, even for programming personnel who have a wealth of experience in traditional GIS development, the transition to the new modeling and programming techniques may be far from simple. From different vocabulary and ways of addressing problems to differences in code management, the Object-Oriented (O-O) world requires changes in many aspects of GIS development. This paper explores the critical issues of teaching an existing GIS development and support staff new O-O techniques, through the experiences of one manager of research and development. Key topics addressed are: taking the fear out Object Speak, designing the training forum, getting the most from the experiences of your non-Object programmers, as well as what to leave in and what to leave out in your programming environments.
