Indian Reservation Road (IRR) Systems: The Navajo Nation

As the Navajo Reservation population rapidly increases, do does the demand for community, economic and residential developments. The need to improve the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Navajo road system to support and prepare for these developments becomes greater. The overall network, network capacity, accessibility to future development areas, as well as the access to communities and rural residences, become central to the reservation transportation planning goals and objectives. To address this need, the Navajo Nation utilizes P.L. 93-638, Self Determination Act, to contract transportation planning and road inventory and map (road atlas) production from the Navajo Area Branch of Roads (BOR). Under this contract the Navajo Nation has developed a geographic information system (GIS), which has greatly aided in the development of the Navajo Nation Comprehensive Transportation Plan. When completed the Navajo Nation will be in a better position to take the responsibility of its roads program from the federal government. This ArcView demonstration is a showcase of the Navajo National Roads Information Management System and its benefits to the Navajo People.
