GPS, ArcView and Multimedia in the Transportation Plan for Antioquia, Colombia
GPS, GIS and multimedia have become basic technologies in the implementation and development of the transportation and infrastructure plan for the Department of Antioquia. All of the roads under the jurisdiction of the Antioquia Public Works Agency were captured using GPS to create an inventory storing spatial and attribute data. This information was then transferred, manipulated, and analyzed in ArcView, where it was combined with other geographic information, like rivers, contours, and geology, as well as interactive information life videos and images. The Department of Antioquia has an area of approximately 62,889 square kilometers and a road network with a longitude of 5,097 km including 135 roads. The information regarding these roads is one of the key aspects in achieving the objective of the transportation and infrastructure plan for the Department of Antioquia, which is to rationalize the resources and investment in construction, maintenance, and territorial expansion projects.
