Access to Public Data: How Far Can We Go?

Mark Ricketson
Steven Keen

How far can we go before we infringe on your rights to privacy? When we try to access "public" information, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) says we can go a long way. Customized GIS installations and the World Wide Web are vastly improving how we access and view information. By adding a spatial component to data and making it easier to access, we have added a new dimension to data. Does FOIA still apply? How far can we go before we invade your privacy? This paper will explore some of these issues by using real-life project examples.
