Scratching the Surface of Florida Bay: A Spatial Analysis of Water Quality

Lynn Gulick
Chris Madden , Ed Biggs

A shipboard flow-through measurement system linked with GPS is helping district personnel to develop high-resolution maps of water quality parameters (chlorophyll, salinity, temperature, pH, and light extinction) along the northern coast of Florida Bay. Water quality surfaces, using collected field data, are generated with ArcView Spatial Analyst. This integration of technologies is providing scientists with the ability to distinguish finer scale relationships of these parameters to landscape features such as creeks, coastal ponds, mangrove islands, and mud banks. This detailed analysis could not be done with the widely spaced, fixed station monitoring that is carried out for the entire bay.
