Implementing GIS on Military Installations - A Practical Guide

Bryan L. Perdue

Management of an installation is fraught with a range of complex, dynamic, and sometimes conflicting objectives. Managers require comprehensive, up-to-date information and analytical tools to support the decision making process through multiple levels of operations. Geographic information system technology provides the foundation to capture, manage, access, analyze, and visualize geographic and related information concerning all aspects of base operations and management. GIS provides tools for solving problems such as identifying the most cost-effective method for managing and rehabilitating physical infrastructures and facilities, monitoring environmental compliance, environmental remediation and cleanup, and land use planning. GIS provides the mechanism to share data throughout the installation optimizing coordination and leveraging investment in operations and data maintenance. In an era of declining personnel and budgetary constraints, GIS can function as the crucial productivity tool for maintaining a high level of "corporate knowledge" while coping with high personnel turnover.
