The paper introduces the database model for using ArcView GIS in environmental data management and presents an environmental extension written in Avenue. Additional software (Visual Basic, Java, MS Access) and ArcView GIS extensions (Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst) are involved. The most common issues people face before loading data into a GIS system is the complexity of the database itself and the internal relationship. It is crucial to lay out the database structure properly in order to build the various spatial and tabular queries and analyses. The second issue is utilization of the data. Data interpolation and modeling is inevitable in the process of environmental analysis. The extension is developed to provide a simplified way for people to manage, access, and analyze environmental data.
