Supplying Water to the Rural Communities of KwaZulu/Natal: Using GIS To Meet South Africa's Reconstruction and Development (RDP) Goals
Robert M PayneUmgeni Water is responsible for the supply of potable water to an area of 36,000 km2 in the KwaZulu/Natal province. The government's RDP program places heavy emphasis on the supply of water to rural communities in isolated areas where there is no land registration and where in large areas of the region tribal authorities control who lives where, with no formal land tenure provisions. The only useful basemaps are thus topographic themes depicting the real world in relation to dwellings and infrastructure. Enterprise GIS addresses all aspects of the business, in particular the management of rural water supply.
