Grizzly Bear Habitat Effectiveness: Assessing Cumulative Effects of Human Use in Jasper National Park Paper Text

Helen Purves
Carol Doering

Jasper National Park is subject to a variety of human uses. Although these activities may or may not pose a threat to grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) populations by themselves, their cumulative effects can have a significant impact. The grizzly bear component of the cumulative effects assessment model relates habitat quality with human activities to estimate overall grizzly bear habitat effectiveness, security area, and linkage zones. ArcInfo is used to evaluate the impact of all current land uses and is able to investigate land use management alternatives to maximize habitat effectiveness for grizzly bears.
