Establishing an Organizational Property Management GIS: MWD's Planning, Engineering, and Marketing ProgramChris SurbeyEduardo Davanzo , Stephan Hubbard, Ricardo Salazar - MWD Daniel Clewley - MWD Larry Boden - Esri The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) covers an area of 5,200 square miles and serves a population of 16 million. Utilities are increasingly working to maximize their property resources. Over the years, MWD has collected precise data about its assets. However, these data served narrow uses and were restricted to local user groups. To complete each "real estate" task, multiple divisions are involved. The solution is an interdivisional GIS to unify data and processes in one environment. The phased implementation is based on the development of a centralized database. Specific problem solving related to property management case studies, and appropriately timed technology advancements, improved organizational support for the system. Specific system benefits included - Improved property site evaluations for alternative usage - Compatibility with outside data resources - Improved operational analysis (field crew travel) Overall, the organization benefits from improved communication between groups, easy and fast access to the property information, and a unifying process for strategic facility decision making.
