Converting Point Daily Rainfall Estimates onto a Rectangular Grid Paper Text

Steve Lynch

Rainfall measurements are commonly observed at point locations and these values are required to be converted to a gridded format. The most common method that is used is the Inverse Distance Squared Weighting interpolation technique. Daily rainfall is measured in Southern Africa, in real time using telemetry, at 184 locations and at a further 5,000 locations that are assimilated monthly into a national daily rainfall database. The techniques, using ArcInfo GIS, will be discussed in this paper to assist researchers in converting point estimates of daily rainfall to a gridded surface that can be used to describe the rainfall in an areal context.
