Defining Issue: How the efficiency of work is accelerated by the development of Intranet/Internet applications. GIS Solution: There are four major Internet/Intranet applications developed by programmers from Woolpert, Dayton, Ohio, in association with the staff at GIS/Mapping Division of Mecklenberg County, North Carolina. Application or Methodology: All four applications are accessed from one main menu, which has graphical buttons. The first application determines the proximity of a specified structure to the FEMA 100-year floodplain. This is going to be a higher priority application and also enables a user to print a GPS elevation certificate. The second application provides a tool for access to a range of data related to City/County storm water maintenance projects. The third application is the Land Development Data Viewer, which presents data depending on the query. The query could be by address or a graphic point and acts on a number of coverages such as soils, landuse 1996, greenways, and so forth. The fourth application determines the location of rain gauges and the quantity and quality of water in the County. Software: All the data for the above applications are either ArcInfo coverages or AutoCAD files, which have been converted to shapefiles. The applications are built with Visual Basic, MapObjects, MapObjects Internet Map Server, Java scripts, and HTML.
