MapObjects and Access, the User-Friendly Solution for Data Collection and Integration

John B. May

The Florida Department of Transportation, District Five, identified a need for a system that would help them integrate GIS information with their many different permitting and inspection activities. Because both permitting and inspection activities generated large volumes of data, and because this information was related to specific and identifiable GIS data, a relational database system was built that would allow users both to collect information about existing facilities and create new facilities in the GIS data layer and relational database simultaneously. This system gives the user complete visualization capabilities while performing inspections in the field and allows the integration of videography and GPS within the GIS. Utilizing MapObjects a GIS system was built that is supported by a 100+ table relational database driven by Microsoft Access. This gives users fluid access to historical and current data related to each feature in the GIS data layer.
