Automated Mapping of Land Records from Within ArcView GIS

John May

Historically the mapping of land information in Jeffersonian Survey Areas has been accomplished manually. To date there have not been any good tools that would automatically map land information within a GIS environment. While powerful ArcInfo has not proven to be a good tool for such a development, ArcView GIS, with its object-based feature handling, has demonstrated a superior capability for tackling this problem. Utilizing Avenue a feature rich tool set has been developed that can read, parse, and automatically map any valid legal description against any Jeffersonian Survey Area, utilizing any GIS vendor's data. Avenue brings more power to the programming solution than does AML because of its object-oriented base. Today these tools are being used by companies to automate the land records mapping process and to tie these geographic data back to their corporate databases.
