Development of FTMS (Freeway Traffic Management System) by Using Client/Server GIS (SDE and Tcl/Tk)

In order to avoid the heavy traffic bottleneck on every freeway, we realized that a GIS-based freeway traffic management system should be developed and applied. Data gathered through various devices such as loop detector and CCTV are transferred to the data processing center via fiber optic lines, and this information should be provided and used for traffic control and simulation. SDE Version 2.1.1 is used as a client/server GIS that stores various information about facilities and analyzes the traffic information. C and X/Motif are used for chart and application development as well as Tcl/Tk for data processing software development. This system is installed at the Freeway Traffic Management Center in Korea Highway Corporation and works well. This system will be expanded to local freeway traffic management centers and local centers can access data through the network.
